(1) What is the study about?
You are invited to participate in a study comparing body shape perception, perfectionism and eating patterns in female elite and recreational athletes between 17 years old and 30 years old. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between sport participation and body shape perception, perfectionism and eating among female elite and recreational athletes. You are eligible to participate in this study if you are a female elite or recreational athlete between ages 17 to 30 years old.
(2) Who is carrying out the study?
Peiling Kong, a student researcher is conducting the research under the supervision of Associate Professor Lynne Harris. The research study will contribute to Peiling Kong’s studies for the award of the Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours) degree course being undertaken at the Australian College of Applied Psychology.
(3)What does the study involve?
If you decide to participate, you will be asked to click on the link at the end of this email and complete a questionnaire that asks you about your sport and training, your beliefs about achievement, your attitudes to eating and to your body, and how you have been feeling in the last week. The questionnaire is in English and should take no more than 10-15 minutes to complete. By participating in this study you will be adding to what is known about the relationship between sport participation, body shape perception, perfectionism and eating among female Australian athletes. We do not anticipate that participating in this study will cause you any discomfort, and your responses are anonymous so that no identifying information such as your name or email address will be requested.
At the completion of the questionnaire you will be provided with a link that is separate to this study to enter a draw to win a $200 Coles Group and Myer gift voucher. If you choose to enter the draw, you will be asked to provide your contact details. These details will be completely separated from your questionnaire responses which will be anonymous.
(3) How much time will the study take?
The online survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete and can be completed at your own convenience.
(4) Will I incur any costs by participating in the study?
There is no cost associated with participating in this study.
(5) Can I tell other people about the study?
Yes, you are welcome to tell other people about the study.
(6) Will I receive the results of the study?
You will have received this invitation through an email list that you are on. A summary of the results of the study will be posted on a website at the completion of the study and a link to the summary will be forwarded to you through the same email list. If you do not want to read the report you can simply delete the email with the link when it arrives.
(7) Confidentiality and disclosure of information
No identifying information will be collected about you as part of the questionnaire study. If you choose to go into the draw for a gift voucher, the information you send will be handled by an ACAP staff member not connected with this study only for the purpose of selecting a winner and will then be deleted. If you consent to participate in this study, the results of the study will be written up as part of Peiling Kong’s honours thesis for the Australian College of Applied Psychology. The results may also be submitted for presentation at an academic conference or publication in an academic journal. In any publication, no information that could identify individual participants will be included.
(8) Can I withdraw from the study?
Being in this study is voluntary and you are not under any obligation to consent to complete the online questionnaire. Submitting a completed questionnaire is an indication of your consent to participate in the study. You can withdraw any time prior to submitting your completed questionnaire. Once you have submitted your questionnaire anonymously, your responses cannot be withdrawn.
